Many people visit a chiropractor because they are experiencing pain. In this initial phase of care, the primary goal is to alleviate your symptoms. This may require daily visits or two to three visits per week for a period of time.
Many individuals mistakenly believe that if they aren’t in pain, they must be healthy. However, pain is a poor indicator of overall health. In reality, pain and other symptoms often only manifest once a disease or condition has progressed significantly.
Take, for instance, a cavity in your tooth. Does it hurt when it first forms, or only after it has become severe? The same goes for heart disease. Whether we’re talking about cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stress, or spinal issues, pain is typically the last symptom to appear. When you start chiropractic care, pain is often the first symptom to diminish, even though much of the underlying condition still remains.
Most chiropractors consider symptom relief to be the easiest part of a patient’s care. However, if treatment is stopped as soon as the pain subsides, the likelihood of the condition returning is much higher. To prevent a rapid recurrence of symptoms, it’s essential to continue care even after the pain has diminished.
During the correction or restorative phase of your care, you won’t need adjustments as frequently as during the initial phase. Depending on your specific situation, you may also start incorporating exercises and stretches, either at the clinic or at home, to help speed up your recovery.
It’s important not to get discouraged if you experience occasional mild flare-ups of your symptoms. This is a normal part of the process. Flare-ups can occur during this phase because your body hasn’t fully healed yet. Depending on the severity of your condition and how long you’ve been dealing with it, this phase of care may last from a few months to several months.
Once your body has fully healed, regular chiropractic care can help prevent the return of physical issues and maintain your body in peak condition. Just as continuing with an exercise routine and a healthy diet is essential to sustaining the benefits of fitness and nutrition, ongoing chiropractic care is crucial for maintaining the health of your musculoskeletal system.
By making routine chiropractic care a part of your lifestyle, you can avoid many of the common aches and pains that others endure, keep your joints in better shape for longer, and continue enjoying the activities you love.
